Best AI Answering Services for Plumbers (2026): Catch the 2 a.m. Leak

How to set up an AI phone answerer for emergency plumbing calls, with triage rules, screening questions and a sample script.

How this page works: Facts and prices come from each vendor's public website (and are labeled when they come from third-party reports), checked October 2026. Prices change, so verify on the vendor's site before buying. We have not hands-on tested these tools yet; any ranking reflects our editorial read of published features and pricing. The plumbing problem: water doesn't wait

A plumber's phone has two speeds. Most weekday calls are routine: a slow drain, a water heater quote, a fixture swap. Then there are the calls that matter most: water coming through a ceiling at 11 p.m., a sewer backup on a holiday weekend, no hot water in January. Those callers dial down the search results until somebody answers, and the first company to pick up usually gets the job.

So for a plumbing shop, an AI answering service has one job above all others: catch the after-hours emergency, get the details right, and get it to whoever is on call, fast. Booking and nice summaries come second.

Our short list for plumbers

1

Wakeman: best emergency escalation

Spots flooding and gas calls, gives a safety message, and rings your on-call phone while the caller is still on the line. Books into Jobber. $149–$829/mo; 14 days or 500 minutes free, no card.

2

OnCrew: best value for one- to five-truck shops

Texts the on-call tech on urgent calls and can live-transfer; Spanish included; $49 for 100 answered calls; 14-day trial, no card.

3

Jobholler: flat price for high call volume

24/7 intake emailed to you; call length doesn't change the price. $85–$399/mo; 3-day trial.

Why this order for plumbing: a burst pipe at 2 a.m. needs a person, not an email. Wakeman and OnCrew both publish live on-call alerting (Wakeman rings the on-call phone during the call; OnCrew texts the on-call tech and can transfer). Jobholler delivers leads by email, which suits routine work better than floods. That's our judgment from published features, not a test result. Its own demo transcript shows Wakeman asking whether leaking water is near an outlet or panel before booking, which is exactly the safety question a plumber wants asked.

Triage rules to set up before you forward a single call

Write these down and paste them into the tool's instructions. Every plumbing shop's rules differ; these are a starting point.

Treat as emergency (alert on-call now)

Next business day

Screening questions to configure

  1. "Is water actively leaking right now?" If yes: "Do you know where your main shut-off valve is?" (Have it give simple shut-off guidance only if you approve the wording.)
  2. "Is this affecting the whole house or one fixture?"
  3. "Is the home on city sewer or a septic system?"
  4. "Are you the homeowner, a tenant, or a property manager?" (Tenants often need landlord approval.)
  5. "What's the service address, and is there a gate code or parking note?"
  6. "Roughly how old is the water heater?" (for no-hot-water calls)

Sample after-hours script

Caller says…What the AI should do
“Water is pouring out under my kitchen sink.”Ask if it's actively leaking; read your approved shut-off guidance; collect address and callback number; mark EMERGENCY; alert on-call by text/transfer; tell the caller when to expect a callback.
“How much do you charge to come out at night?”State your after-hours trip/diagnostic fee only if you've given it one; otherwise say a tech will confirm pricing on callback.
“My water heater is making a noise.”Ask for age, gas vs electric, any leaking; book or log for next business day unless leaking.
“I smell gas.”Tell them to leave the building and call the gas utility or 911. Log the call and alert you. Do not schedule.

Plumbing-specific notes: Jobholler's Pro plan lists weather alerts and multiple lines, which may help during freeze events when burst pipes spike (we haven't confirmed how the alerts work in practice). Wakeman publishes included minutes plus a per-minute overage, so a busy freeze week costs more; flat plans are more predictable.

What it costs a plumbing shop

Illustrative math, not data: a 2-truck plumber forwarding nights and weekends, about 80 answered calls a month averaging 3 minutes (240 minutes). List prices, October 16, 2026.
ToolPlan that fitsMonthly
OnCrewStarter (100 calls)$49
JobhollerStarter$85
WakemanAfter Hours (300 min)$149
Jobber ReceptionistAdd-on, if you use Jobber$29

In a freeze week, the same shop might triple its after-hours calls. On OnCrew, 240 calls would be $149 on Pro. On Wakeman After Hours, 720 minutes would be $149 + 420 × $0.59 = $396.80, unless your spend cap stops it sooner and sends calls to your cell.

Who should skip an AI answering service

Pros and cons of using AI for plumbing calls

Pros (from vendor info)

  • Answers every after-hours call instead of voicemail
  • Consistent intake: address, problem, urgency
  • Keeps your existing number via forwarding
  • Cheaper than a 24/7 human answering service at entry tiers (vendor list prices)

Cons / watch-outs

  • You must define emergencies carefully; a vague setup means 2 a.m. alerts for dripping faucets
  • Gas or safety calls need a fixed script that sends callers to the utility/911
  • Per-minute plans can spike during freeze or flood events
  • Integrations with Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan aren't published; ask the vendor

FAQ

Should the AI quote emergency rates?

Only if you give it exact wording. Many plumbers prefer the AI to state the after-hours trip fee and leave everything else to the on-call tech.

Can it dispatch my on-call plumber automatically?

Check each vendor. Wakeman can book into Jobber; others notify by text or email. Test it with a fake 2 a.m. call during the trial.

What about Spanish-speaking callers?

OnCrew includes Latin American Spanish at no extra charge. We didn't find Spanish listed on Wakeman's or Jobholler's current pricing pages; ask them directly.

Is this cheaper than an answering service?

Entry plans here run $49–$149/month (October 2026). See our cost guide for how minute-based pricing works.
